Don't forget to attend our next "First Friday Townhall" this Friday, November 4, 2016 at 7:30 AM at the Pasadena Hilton. [See table below for details.] Our guest speaker will be Larry Sand, President of the California Teachers Empowerment Network (CTEN).
There is no institution in California more failed or more broken than our public school system. Its failures are so numerous and so well known that I need not recite them here. What I will do, however, is to provide a larger context for understanding this institution and its failures.
We must first understand that the primary purpose of the public school system is not to educate but to indoctrinate. Its objectives are political, not educational. In the coming months, I will explain why our most important institution is not the presidency, Congress, the Supreme Court or even all of them taken together. The single institution that is indispensable to the achievement of the statist's goals is the public school system. It is the Citadel of the Left. It is through this system that they indoctrinate America's youth and induce them to submit to their authority.
The Left's control of California's public school system gives it control of 40-50% of the California State budget, i.e, at least $70 billion a year. It also gives some control over the minds of over 6 million children. It gives them unfettered, unfiltered access to their parents as well. It also gives them control over billions of dollars in school bonds every year. It enables them to hire and control 350,000 members of the California Teachers Association alone, each of whom pay $1000 a year in dues, and each of whom is a paid, partisan, political activist. That's $350,000,000 each year!
Nationally, the teacher unions are the largest, most powerful political pressure group in America. They subscribe to and promote a political agenda that advocates the unlimited growth of an all-powerful central government. Taken as a whole, the public school monopoly in California and America is the greatest single threat to the political and economic future of our state and of our country.
School choice, which will return control of children's education to parents, is the solution to this problem. It is a solution that is long overdue.
This Friday, you will have the opportunity to hear about these issues from Larry Sand, a retired LAUSD teacher. He'll be speaking about these issues that he has been addressing for over 20 years.
I look forward to seeing you on Friday. Huzzah!
